About Volta a Catalunya
The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is the fourth oldest stage-race in the world, with only the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Tour of Belgium pre-dating it. Falling in the heart of the Spring Classics period, the seven-day race offers those riders tired of cobblestones some sunnier solace and a chance to hone their form ahead of the first Grand Tour of the year, the Giro.
The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya follows a similar format year-on-year, with several stages in the high mountains of the Pyrenees and a tough individual time-trial before a chaotic final day around the suburbs of Barcelona.
The seven day stage-race attracts some of the biggest names in the pro peloton and often favours the purest of climbers, for example Adam Yates, Miguel Ángel López, Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana have all won this race in the last six years. Yates will return this year eager to defend his title from 2021 but will face some fierce competition from a number of other GC specialists, especially from those honing their form ahead of the upcoming Giro d’Italia in May.
