About E3 Saxo Bank Classic
Some cycle races are named after former winners, fabled finishing towns or the region in which they take place. Not this one, this one is named after a Belgian motorway that runs between Antwerp and Kortrijk – glamorous, right?
Like the Tour of Flanders and other Flandrian Classics, the E3 Saxo Bank Classic follows a regular route that twists and turns its way through both West and East Flanders, scrambling up leg-breaking climbs in the hilly areas of Oudenaarde and the Flemish Ardennes. Climbs like the Paterberg, Oude Kwaremont and Teigemberg all feature in this race, with the latter often proving decisive as the final climb before the fast finish into Harelbeke.
It is, in every way, a mini Tour of Flanders and therefore suits those riders who relish the roads of the Ronde. The fact that eight riders have won this race and the Tour of Flanders in the same year emphasise this similarity. The last rider to do the double was Kasper Asgreen last year. Will we see this year’s E3 champion go on to also claim the crown in the Tour of Flanders?
