About Amstel Gold Race
Held in the hilly province of Limburg, Amstel Gold Race is the only one-day WorldTour race staged in the Netherlands and is thus considered one of the biggest targets of the year for the home nation. If you’re a Dutch rider, Amstel is up there with the five Monuments in terms of racing prestige.
The Netherlands reign supreme in this race with 18 wins from 55 editions. One of their most successful riders of all time, Jan Raas, sits on top of the winners list with five Amstel victories - one ahead of the evergreen Belgian, Philippe Gilbert. In 2019 Raas’ young compatriot, Mathieu van der Poel, won a memorable edition that will no doubt go down as the best ever in the history of the race.
Van der Poel’s victory ended an 18-year drought for the Dutch in this race, taking the first win for the home nation since Erik Dekker in 2001, and also marked 29 years since his father Adrie van der Poel took his own Amstel title. Can the Van der Poel family take home a third title in 2022?
