About Paris-Roubaix Femmes
On May 5th, 2020, history was made when the UCI announced that it would be adding a women’s edition of Paris-Roubaix to their revised 2020 Women’s WorldTour calendar. That landmark event was later postponed to the autumn of 2021 due to problems posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but when it finally took place on October 2nd we saw history made and the groundwork laid for a race that looks set to stand the test of time.
The creation of a women’s Paris-Roubaix has now upped the count of women’s Monuments to three, with the other two being the long-established Ronde van Vlaanderen and the more recent Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes.
The race is organised by ASO, the same organisational committee that also runs the men’s race, the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes. In adding blockbuster races like Paris-Roubaix and the Tour de France to the women’s racing calendar, both ASO and the UCI are taking important strides towards equality.
While full parity between men’s and women’s racing is still a long way off, it’s races like these that will help to increase the profile of women’s racing and get more and more people watching, from both the roadside and on TV at home.
