About the UCI World Championships
Jerseys are an integral part of cycling, both as a sport and as a culture. Not only do they indicate a rider’s team affinity or national colours, they also denote achievement and accomplishment too. Wearing the rainbow bands of World Champion is perhaps the highest honour and achievement one can attain in the sport.
Sure, the Tour’s yellow jersey looks good, but you can only wear that - at most - for three weeks of the year. Win the World Championships and you get to wear the rainbow bands for an entire season, not to mention write your name into cycling’s coveted hall of fame for the rest of eternity. As a result, the World Championships are some of the most hard fought races seen all year, where every single rider is willing to risk it all just for the slimmest chance of victory.
The world champs now consist of a Road Race and Time Trial for all Elite, Under-23 and Junior categories, as well as a Mixed Team Relay that features both male and female riders racing together in a timed event. While most categories are afforded their own distinct events, the Under-23 Women are not and are instead thrown into the Elite Women’s Time Trial and Road Races. The highest finishing rider under the age of 23 in these Elite races is crowned the Under-23 World Champion.
